Risers are stained with a dark walnut and sealed with a protective coating. The risers do come gently sanded, but as for any piece of wood, always look out for stray slivers. This is from reclaimed wood from pallets and crates so there will be empty nail holes and unique flaws in each piece. It is possible for the wood to shrink in size after it hits the dry elements. That shouldn't change the structure, but you may notice little gaps in the pieces.
